Frequently asked questions

Are these rankings based on your own tests?

No. They are built from third-party data such as developer surveys, reported revenue and search interest, and each page says so. Our own editor's ratings are separate and are never mixed into a ranking.

How often are rankings updated?

Each ranking shows the date it was last updated and the sources behind it. We refresh a ranking when its sources publish new data, and the date on the page changes when we do.

Why do the rankings differ from your ratings?

A ranking measures how widely a tool is used, from outside data. A rating is the editor's judgment of a tool's capability, reliability, pricing and privacy from public information. A popular tool can rate lower, and the reverse.
